SKIN IS THE NEW AUDIOVISUAL PERFORMANCE BY RECENT ARTS, A COLLABORATION  WITH ARGENTINEAN SINGER BARBIE WILLIAMS,
PERFORMERS AND DANCERS

Skin is a live performance composed by different audiovisual pieces. These are made with recorded video sessions where performers and dancers embraced the body in the form of improvised movements based on the music of Tobias Freund and Barbie Williams. These improvisations are filtered through Valentina´s experiences, emotions and conceptual ideas to create a poetic story line. Throughout the show the video projections of the moving bodies in tandem with haunting musical landscapes, will tell stories and generate tensions, inviting the audience to think about the limits and possibilities of their own bodies.

STAGE DESIGN AND MUSIC

Video and music will be played, processed and mixed live on stage and the concept of skin will be developed in the stage design. Recent Arts will performe behind a translucent screen and it is through a sequence of lightning effects that they will be seen by the audience. The transparent screen is used here as a metaphor of the skin, a boundary and a semi-permeable membrane that divides the inside from the outside, a site at which ideas of surface and depth intersect and emerge. All elements of the show, music, lights, video projections and the live singing will create a sense of union. The music will be performed live with a looper using a bass guitar running through a freezer, as well as drum synth that plays in real time non qantized beats. Simultaneously, there will be vocal improvisations. The music style is basically drone and simple broken beats.

SKIN CONCEPT

We live in an increasingly technological world characterised by a never ending desire of perfection. An era of smartphones and social media that constantly attempts to divide us, disembody us and categorise the body. In this context, we see the need to present the “moving body itself” as communicative agent, using improvisatory actions as one of our main sources of inspiration and creation. The body and the skin will never be perfect nor allow perfection to be achieved. On the contrary, body and skins manifest as an evolving map of the individual’s experience, which cannot be wiped clean and which is in a constant process of decay and regeneration.

RECENT ARTS COLLABORATION WITH DANCERS AND PERFORMERS

In the creation of the videos of this project Recent Arts worked with dancers Xenia Wiest (Russia), Shiori Tada (Japan), Rob Fordeyn ( Belgium) and performers Simona Marini and Desireh (Germany), all  based in Berlin.

Recent Arts created SKIN thinking on the possibility to include a live dance performance when the venues or events have the capacity to host a bigger show. This new element would bring a new dimension to the performance: the interaction between the real moving bodies, the bodies in the video projections, the singer and Recent Arts. As mentioned before one of the main sources of inspiration of this show is the idea of “improvisation” so this concept will define the way the show will un- fold. We are very exited to bring together in this hybrid show the world of experimental electronic music, of audiovisual and performing arts.
